Technology

Introduction

Sharna can be generally described as "Schizotech" - that is to say that Sharna's technology levels vary on a country by country basis (and sometimes even varying inside of the same country). It isn't abnormal to see a freeway abruptly end and see a cobblestone road leading to it at a country border.

If one were to look at Sharna as a whole, one would generally believe that it is in a Renaissance level of technology when compared to that pathetic "Earth" planet. However, as previously mentioned, this varies greatly.

Areas of high technology

Usually, areas of high technology are due to artifact sites being discovered nearby. For instance, the nation of Goug was founded on top of some of the largest archaeological ruins humanity have ever discovered, with signs of ruined nuclear reactors and spaceports being found. As a result of their educational focus and general cultural emphasis on restoring technology, the nation was able to quickly adapt to their newfound technology and greatly increase their tech to be amongst the highest in present-day Sharna.

Other areas of technology are due to borrowing technology from neighbors. The modern Dwarven nation of Shield inherited technology from the deeper Dwarves of the Onyx during their civil war, and the Elven nation of Miin has borrowed and adapted technology from Shield. United Fovoham appears to be in the process of borrowing and learning technology from Goug.

Areas of low technology

Some nations are greatly resistant to technological influence. The various nations of the High Elves, for instance, maintain their technological traditions and adamantly refuse to embrace the technology of their cousins to the North (with the notable exception of Vaan's espionage network, which seems to have absolutely no issues with computer hacking). In general, all of the Elven nations (save Miin) hesitate to adopt new technologies for similar reasons, although typically not in as extreme of a case. The most extreme case of low technology independence comes from the nomadic Mirage Elves, which go so far as to not even forge iron themselves and simply live off of the land itself.
