Languages

The AnimeRPG system doesn't really handle multiple languages; the default campaign world is one where almost everyone speaks the same language. Sharna is not that way. There are lots of languages (listed below) and lots of reasons why two people won't be able to speak the same language.

As such, these are the rules that I'm using.

Anime RPG 3.x Rules

  • Languages are int-based skills.
  • Normal languages require characters to be "exposed" to the language.
  • Special languages require characters to be taught the language.
  • You cannot "partially" learn a language. Either you know it or you don't.
  • Proficiency (2 SP) is enough to learn a language.
    • There is no reason to be more than proficient with a language.
  • Characters start with two languages (one "Regional", one "National") at proficient.

Yume En Rules

  • Languages are int-based skills.
  • Languages require characters to be "exposed" to the language.
  • Characters are encouraged to slowly learn languages.
  • 1 Skill point in a language allows you to understand some phrases and speak the occasional word or two.
    • Understanding and/or conveying information requires a language check.
  • 2 Skill points in a language allows you to understand most phrases and speak some phrases.
    • Uncommonly used phrases require a language check, along with conveying difficult concepts.
  • 3+ Skill points and a total check of +5 or better to be fully fluent in a normal language.
  • 3+ Skill points and a total check of +7 or better to be fully fluent in a special language.
  • Characters start with two languages (one "Regional", one "National"). These can be represented by having a +5 unique ability (costs 0).
    • Characters can be taught a normal language for 0 SP by NPC trainers. This is the same unique ability as above.

Languages

  • Human
  • Ancient Human 1
  • Elven
  • Ancient Elven 1
  • Zard
  • Ancient Zard 1
  • Draconic
  • Ancient Draconic 1
  • Dwarven
  • Ancient Dwarven 1
  • Taurian
  • Ancient Taurian 1
  • Imp 2
    • Imp is considered the psionic language of Stealth. One only needs to communicate by looking at each other's eyes rather than the ability to hear each other. Communication between multiple parties is difficult and tend to be a series of two-way conversations instead.
  • Moogle 2
    • Moogle is considered the psionic language of Diplomacy. Listening to the word "kupo" allows the speaker to communicate to a particular person without anyone else picking up on what was being said or to whom, as long as each party can hear each other. Group psionic conversations are possible.

1 Related to the non-ancient version; characters can infer some words (roughly 1/10th). 2 Special language; characters knowing either Imp or Moogle can infer the other but require both sets of requirements to adequately communicate without potentially insulting and/or miscommunication.
