MountainElf

Races of Sharna

If elves are considered to be very isolationist, stuck up, and aloof creatures, Mountain Elves are the exception to the rule. They are nearly opposites of the High Elves.

Racial Tensions and Opinions

High Elves

Mountain Elves and High Elves have an almost hatred for each other stemming back thousands of years. Even though each race lives in the other's lands, Mountain Elves (in general) would trust a random human being more than a random High Elf. In recent years, however, a conscious effort has been made to try to improve relations with the race.

Mirage Elves

If you ask a random traveling merchant what the number one key to their success is, they would answer "The Mirage". Mountain Elves use the Mirage as mercenaries and bodyguards, especially Mountain Elven merchants. They trust Mirage with their lives, hold them almost as high up as a Dwarf, and pay them very handsomely.

Night Elves

Night Elves are viewed as aloof and unusual (for an elf). In general, Mountain Elves don't have a problem with Night Elves, but some negative stereotypes remain about the race, and they expect nothing but to be ignored by them.

Silver Elves

If a Mountain Elf comes across a Silver Elf, there is a very high chance that the Mountain Elf is going to try and learn as much as possible about their race, their lands, and even their favorite foods. They're viewed as extremely rare and held to a somewhat high regard.

Half Elves

Like most varieties of elves, Mountain Elves treat Half Elves are treated as though they are human. In this case, that's not necessarily a bad thing, and a half-High Elf is probably treated better than a full High Elf.

Shield Dwarves

Shield Dwarves are treated as fellow brothers and sisters, as unusual as that may sound. While a Mirage is considered to be their guardian and protector, a Dwarf is typically considered to be their best friend. If a Mountain Elf goes adventuring, chances are they're going adventuring with a Dwarf.

Other Dwarves

Most Mountain Elves can't actually tell the difference between the dwarven races, thus treat the rest of them as they treat a Shield Dwarf.

Imps

Unlike most of their brethren, Mountain Elves treat Imps with respect. In their mind, the best way to catch a thief is to have a thief help you catch them, and they view Imps as the best thieves in the world.

Sprites

Mountain Elves view Sprites as playful creatures that enjoy life to the fullest, but typically not the best trading partners. As such, they rarely take sprites seriously.

Humans

Mountain Elves treat Humans as their largest trading partner, often trading with opposing sides of humans simultaneously.

All Other Races

Mountain Elves view other races as potential trading partners, thus tend toward treating a stranger positively.

Stereotypes

Positive

Mountain Elves are merchants, traders, and diplomats. They use their natural charm to ease and relax any situation, and seek to avoid conflict at nearly all costs. They're prone to adaptation and flexibility, almost beyond that of humanity, and are at ease with making unusual friends. A Mountain Elf around a group of others is typically a steadfast ally that will support the group and spread word of their exploits.

Negative

Mountain Elves are manipulative spies, diplomats, politicians, and occasionally assassins. They use their wiles to influence any situation they dislike and manipulate others to do their dirty work. They've turned their backs upon thousands of years of tradition to embrace what is convenient over what is "correct". The only way to trust what a Mountain Elf has to say is if it is in their best interest to tell you the truth. They will change friendships and allegiances with the wind. A Mountain Elf around a group of others is a weak and frail addition that needs to be protected far more than their actual worth.

Average members of the race

Random Person

An average Mountain Elf has stellar charm, above average intelligence and agility (showing their common elven ancestry), but well below average strength and health. They're typically not combat trained and often have never even used a weapon.

Random Adventurer

In general, Mountain Elven adventurers are typically just a higher powered version of a standard Mountain Elf, but with more energy (Mountain Elf adventurers typically have some form of personal magic) and an incredibly large amount of charm. A typical Mountain Elf Adventurer in society would be a traveling merchant, diplomat, or spy.
